Description

The MQ 2 Smoke Detection Sensor/MQ2 Gas Sensor is a popular gas detection module used in various electronics projects and applications.

Here's an overview and some details about the MQ 2 Smoke Detection Sensor:

Purpose: The MQ-2 is designed to detect various gases, including LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), butane, propane, methane, alcohol, hydrogen, and smoke.

Sensitivity: It has a high sensitivity to flammable gases. The sensor can work at temperatures ranging from -20 to 50°C.

Principle: It works on the principle that gases will cause the resistance of the sensing material to change. The sensor uses a tin dioxide (SnO2) sensitive layer whose resistance changes depending on the concentration of gases in the environment.

Features of MQ2 Gas Sensor:

Analog and Digital Output: Typically, the MQ-2 sensor module provides both analog and digital outputs. The analog output can be used for reading the concentration of gases, while the digital output can be used as a trigger when gas concentration reaches a certain level.

Adjustable Sensitivity: Many MQ-2 modules come with a built-in potentiometer that allows users to adjust the sensor's sensitivity.

Low Cost: The MQ-2 is relatively inexpensive, making it a popular choice for DIY projects and various applications. Versatility: Because it can detect a variety of gases, it's a versatile choice for many different applications.

Applications of MQ2 Gas Sensor:

Safety: Used in gas leakage detecting equipment in families and industries, it's useful for detecting gas leaks that could lead to fires or explosions.

Air Quality Monitoring: Can be used to monitor indoor or outdoor air quality by detecting the presence of harmful gases. DIY Projects: Hobbyists and students use the MQ-2 in various electronics projects to detect the presence of gases.

Using the MQ2 Gas Sensor:

Powering the Sensor: It typically requires a 5V DC power source. Calibration: For precise applications, you might need to calibrate the sensor in clean air to get a reference resistance value.

Reading Values: You can use a microcontroller (like Arduino) to read values from the sensor. The analog output can be read directly using an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) pin on the microcontroller. The digital output can be connected to a digital input pin to get a high/low signal based on the set threshold.

Considerations of MQ2 Gas Sensor:

Warm-Up Time: The sensor might require some time (typically a few minutes) to warm up and give accurate readings. Environmental Factors: Factors like humidity and temperature can affect readings. It's essential to consider this if precision is required.

Lifespan: Like all sensors, the MQ-2 has a limited lifespan, especially if exposed to high concentrations of gas for extended periods. To integrate the MQ-2 sensor into a system or project, you'll likely need additional components like a microcontroller, display (if you want to see readings), and other circuit components based on the specifics of your application.

    Items
System Characteristics of MQ2 Gas Sensor
Parameter name Min Type Max Unit
    VCC Working Voltage 4.9 5 5.1 V
    PH Heating consumption 0.5 - 800 mW
RL Load Resistance - can adjust - -
    RH Heater Resistance - 33 -
    Rs Sensing Resistance 3 - 30 kΩ

The following conditions must be avoided

Water Condensation: Indoor conditions, slight water condensation will affect sensors’ performance lightly. However, if water condensation on the surface of the sensor and keep a certain period, the sensor’s sensitivity will be decreased.

Used in high gas concentration: No matter whether the sensor is electrified or not if a long time is placed in high gas concentration it will affect the sensor’s characteristics.

Longtime storage: The sensor’s resistance produces reversible drift if it’s stored for a long time without electrifying, this drift is related to storage conditions. Sensors should be stored in airproof without silicone gel bags with clean air. For the sensors with long time storage but no electricity, they need a long aging time for stability before use.

Longtime exposure to an adverse environment: No matter whether the sensors are electrified or not if exposed to an adverse environment for a long time, such as high humidity, high temperature, or high pollution, etc, it will affect the performance of the sensor badly.

Vibration: Continual vibration will result in sensors’ down-lead response and then rapture. In transportation or assembling lines, a pneumatic screwdriver/ultrasonic welding machine can lead to this vibration.

Concussion: If sensors meet strong concussion, it may lead its lead wire to disconnect.

    It's a Toy

This sensor is working perfectly. But this is a toy. Only suitable for demo. Not suitable for real life gas detection.
