Here's how the HC-SR04 sensor works:

Sending Ultrasonic Waves: The sensor has two main components: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter emits short bursts of ultrasonic waves (sound waves with a frequency higher than the human hearing range) when triggered by an external source, like a microcontroller.

Reflection and Reception: Once the ultrasonic waves encounter an object in their path, they bounce off the object and return to the sensor. The receiver component of the sensor picks up these reflected waves.

Calculating Distance: The sensor measures the time it takes for the ultrasonic waves to travel from the transmitter, hit the object, and return to the receiver. Since the speed of sound is relatively constant in the environment, you can use the time measurement to calculate the distance using the formula: Distance = (Time taken by waves to return * Speed of Sound) / 2 The division by 2 is necessary because the waves travel to the object and back. Microcontroller Integration: To use the HC-SR04, you typically connect it to a microcontroller, such as an Arduino or Raspberry Pi. The microcontroller sends a trigger signal to the sensor, measures the time it takes for the echo to return, and then calculates the distance using the formula mentioned above.
